Venezuelan update: Gutierrez moving up to lightweight

Venezuela's Roger ¨The Kid¨ Gutiérrez, a former 130-pound titist, is staying active despite two straight losses. Gutiérrez (27-6-1) is scheduled to fight Mexico's Alan ¨Superman¨ Ayala (11-3) on Saturday, May 18th. The bout is scheduled for ten rounds in the lightweight division and will be the main event of a show organized by Venezuelan promoter Morón Box at the Palacio de Eventos de Venezuela in Maracaibo.

Gutiérrez, age 29, will step into the ring for the second time in 2024. In the beginning of February, he lost by unanimous decision in Russia against Zaur Abdullaev (19-1).  Last year, Gutiérrez defeated Dominican Henry Delgado (20-2) by knockout in the second round. Later, in mid 2023, he lost by knockout to undefeated Otar Eranosyan (14-0) in a WBA eliminator at junior lightweight.

After announcing his next challenge on his official Instagram account, he commented: “I am very happy to confirm my return to the ring, next May 18th in my homeland Maracaibo, Venezuela”.

Ayala was born in Guadalajara, Mexico. This will be the most important fight of his career, after having fought two fights last year. In 2023, Ayala vanquished his compatriot Daniel Méndez Torres (20-5-1) by knockout, then in December he defeated Giovanny Alexander López (4-25-1), also by knockout. He has only one loss in his last five fights.
